Kalamazoo Winter Market

We’ve been pretty busy on the weekends, traveling around a bit, I guess.  I’ve been excited to be in town AND remember to go to the winter market.  I normally think about it on Saturdays when we’re out of town, or on Sundays when we’re in town – never the right moment.  The market is so close to our house, right across the street from the pavilion where the summer farmers’ market is.  I finally remembered to go this past Saturday!  After a nice breakfast of french toast and Mickey Mouse pancakes, we decided to head off to the market.

It’s held in the Bingo Hall, which isn’t quite the most welcoming place.  Bad lighting, and floors that make you feel like you’re in a strange gym.  There are lovely smells though – not reminiscent of a musty gym, but of hot meaty things on a grill, and pots of chili and stews that fill the air.  As soon as we walked in John (pictured above) was excitedly pushing his eggs on us.  He was eager to tell us they were laid yesterday and I was all, “Whoa, guy.  Slow down with the sales pitch!  I’ll buy some eggs!”  No, actually it was quite the opposite.  I was all about everything this guy had to say about his chickens and their eggs.  I wanted to pull up a chair and hear more from good ol’ John.

While I want to give the Winter Market a facelift (you know, help these lovely farmers improve their current dry-erase board signs, rearrange the folding tables into cute stalls…), I love a market where I can head home with fresh eggs, organic local meat, some winter squash, and canned fruit.

*Note: I thought I was being careful not to take a picture of any Amish folks at the market!  They don’t believe in pictures because I think they think it takes their souls.  Well, I’m a jerk who now owns the soul of the dude in the far right of John’s photo.  Sorry, guy!

Oh man, I wish we had a winter market near us. The closest Farmer’s Market to us sounds a bit like yours, though, charming and old school. I would pull up a chair with you and listen to the egg guy! We get our eggs from a nearby family that have chickens in their backyard and one Saturday he gave us the tour. We loved it :)

I’m sure we could find two metal folding chairs to sit with the egg guy. He also has a claw/hook hand. What’s the PC term for that? Oh well… So where are you in Michigan?

      • NicoleD says:

Totally! Ha, I have no idea what the pc term is. Good question. Does he gather chicken eggs with it?? Your egg guy is so much cooler than my egg guy :) I live in Shelby Township, about 40 minutes north of the D. I grew up in Holland, though, so I’m a west-sider at heart.

My egg guy is pretty cool. Not gonna lie. We swapped sides! I grew up on the east side of Michigan! (Davisburg/Clarkston/Ortonville)
